accidental rage bait launch video
- cohesive and fun story
- clearly shows what the product is
- some nice shots
- good rage bait
but
- music is soft, doesn't develop, is copyrighted (can't post this on a lot of channels)
- not showing the texts on an actual phone makes the whole product seem fake
- other parts appear fake / impossible (how does the agent know hes eating cereal or looking in the fridge)
- uncanny valley with camera, script and production quality (too good to feel authentic amateur and too raw to feel high quality)
- not so great acting
- slow pacing
- main hook line "you dont know what it is" is spoken under her breath
- nit pick but "favourite" is english spelling but these people appear to be American
- totally missed the feature that orchid can be used together with other people? is that real?
this video went viral mostly because its rage bait - product appears to enable men to be bad boyfriends and play video games. men found this funny, women really didnt.
which is the best part of the video. since men are likely their initial customers (since theyre more tech forward), rage bait for their opposite works really well, whatever your ethical considerations are.
the big issue here is that orchid is one of a million iMessage agents now and appears to not be differentiated at all from Poke, which is bigger with their audience, seems better executed, and defined the storytelling launch video category they're doing.
maybe fine for general pop, but wont work on tech people and especially not investors (which is usually a target for these launches).
the rule is that if your product looks like a lot like another larger product, you either need to
- acknowledge that in the video (e.g. "unlike other iMessage assistants")
- or focus on differentiated features. and make sure they feel real.
for magical AI features, you really do need to show the actual product or else it seems totally fake and people wont buy it.
all that said, this was one of the best rage bait launch videos all year. congrats on the launch!
